</strong>The Mississippi Computational Biology Consortium (MCBC) is a research thrust of the Mississippi Computational Sciences Network (MCSN). The MCSN is funded by a grant from the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) of the <a href="http://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation (NSF)</a>. The MCBC aims to stimulate competitive research that combines computation and biology by facilitating innovative collaborations among life scientists and computer scientists within institutions and across institutions in the State of Mississippi. Areas of interest include high-performance computational biology, bio-ontologies, systems biology, computational and mathematical modeling and ecoinformatics. The Seed Research Grant Program is one of the activities developed to achieve the MCBC&#8217;s aim.</p>

<p><strong>SEED RESEARCH GRANT OBJECTIVES<br />
</strong>The MCBC Seed Research Grants are designed for faculty to develop innovative projects and gather preliminary data to increase their ability to compete for competitive extramural funding. These grants are intended to stimulate novel research with strong likelihood of attracting competitive funding. Although the budget can remain entirely at a single institution, grants which promote multidisciplinary collaborations between investigators at different MCBC institutions are strongly encouraged.</p>

<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY<br />
</strong>In the first round, interdisciplinary groups of faculty from each of the following three Universities; Jackson State University, Mississippi State University and University of Southern Mississippi will be eligible to submit applications. Relevant research areas include high-performance computational biology, bioinformatics, bio-ontologies, system biology, computational and mathematical modeling and ecoinformatics. One proposal is expected from each university and should include a strong plan to collaborate with at least one other institution. In subsequent rounds, faculty from any research university in the State of Mississippi University System will be eligible to apply for seed research grants.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Mississippi Computational Biology Consortium (MCBC) is a National Science Foundation funded initiative to stimulate research in computational biology by facilitating innovative collaborations among life scientists and computer scientists within and across institutions in the State of Mississippi.</p>
<p>In 1992, the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation created the Computational Biology Activity program in response to dramatic changes in computation in biological research. Seven years later, the Directorate mainstreamed research in computation biology into all biology programs, at which time Mary E. Clutter, then Assistant Director of Biological Sciences at the NSF, observed : </p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 9pt;">We now stand at the gateway to a new age in biology. The success of this new age will depend on how well we cultivate the interface of computer science and technology with the science of biology.  Along with the revolution in the biological sciences has come the equally dramatic explosion in computer and information science and technology.  Working together, these disciplines will ultimately give us the tools to increase our understanding of biological processes at higher orders of complexity, form the behavior of atoms and molecules to cells to organisms to whole ecosystems.</span></span></p></blockquote>
